Kōwhai Park solar farm commissioned in Christchurch

Kōwhai Park Solar Farm has been commissioned in Christchurch, marking one of New Zealand's largest solar developments.
Developed through a joint venture between Contact Energy and Lightsource bp, the solar farm is expected to generate about 275GWh of renewable electricity a year from roughly 300,000 solar panels - enough to supply the equivalent of about 36,000 homes.
Its completion adds a major asset to New Zealand's renewable generation base and marks a step forward for Christchurch's emerging renewable energy precinct. The grid connection work brought together several infrastructure and engineering groups to deliver the high-voltage link needed to connect the site to the wider network.
Ventia carried out the high-voltage infrastructure works, including two substations and 5.5 kilometres of 66kV cable. Beca provided design and engineering services, as well as technical support during delivery. Fulton Hogan handled trenching for the 66kV cables, while HRS Constructions supported civil works across the two new substations.
The project highlights the scale of work needed beyond the solar panels themselves to bring new renewable generation online. Substations, cable routes and network integration remain central to large energy developments, particularly as New Zealand expands generation aimed at reducing reliance on higher-emissions sources.
Project roles
The companies involved described the work as a coordinated effort across design, engineering, civil construction and energy infrastructure. That mix was needed to complete what they described as a complex network connection for the site.
Craig MacDonald, General Manager, Energy Networks and Renewables at Ventia, said the project showed what could be achieved through joint delivery.
"Kōwhai Park demonstrates what can be achieved when industry partners bring their expertise together behind a shared goal," MacDonald said.
He said Ventia was proud to support the developers on a large-scale renewable project.
"We're proud to have played our part in supporting Contact and Lightsource bp to build renewable generation at scale.
This has been a great partnership with Ventia and an opportunity for our technical specialists to contribute to a flagship renewable energy project," said Mark Jacob, General Manager - Energy at Beca.
Jacob's remarks highlighted the role specialist engineering teams play in connecting generation projects safely and reliably to the grid.
Grid connection
For New Zealand's electricity sector, projects such as Kōwhai Park show that renewable generation build-outs depend not only on developers and asset owners, but also on contractors and engineering firms that can deliver transmission and distribution links. The connection package included both above-ground and underground infrastructure, with the substations and 66kV cable route forming the key interface with the network.
Christchurch has been developing a larger cluster of renewable and related energy infrastructure, and Kōwhai Park adds to that momentum. Its annual output places it among the country's more substantial solar developments, reflecting the broader expansion of utility-scale solar in a market that has historically relied more heavily on hydro, geothermal and wind generation.
For contractors, the wider significance is that utility-scale solar projects increasingly create demand for specialist design, civil and network connection work alongside panel installation. At Kōwhai Park, that work ranged from trenching and civil construction to engineering support and high-voltage installation, illustrating the breadth of supply chain involvement in a single renewable project.
